Romany Caravan

Horse-drawn caravans were first built for travelling show people in the early nineteenth century. Romany Gypsies started to live in caravans, which they call vardoes, in the 1850s.

Before this they travelled by horse or foot and camped in tents made from hazel rods covered with tarpaulin. Romany culture is the product of many influences but its roots reach back to ninth century India.


Construction
Individually hand crafted in our Burford workshop. Bespoke, hand-made by knowledgeable craftsmen, using the best of traditional techniques complemented with contempory know-how.

The high windows provide ventilation at the top of the house so the chickens are draught free and wind and rain is provented from blowing in on them. The shutters provided are ideal protection during the cold winter nights.

The hinged side provides excellent access for cleaning the inside of the house.

This product contains 2 nest boxes situated rear of the coop.

The range has no external features, such as nest boxes, to distract from the original, clean lines of the designs that our bespoke chicken houses are based on.

Timber
Your hen house is created from joinery grade 12mm T and G pine with a generous coat of wood preserver applied.

Wheels and Mobility
The Romany Caravan comes complete with fully working wheels.The wheels give mobility to the chicken house for transport around the garden if necessary. The wheels are hand made locally from heavy gauge steel and painted for their protection. Additionally we source individually reclaimed where possible from original stock.

Roof
We use the highest quality, fully galvanised steel for your Romany Caravan, while the forthcoming Bathing Hut has high quality cedar shingles.

Perches
The perches in the Cotswold Hen Houses are smoothed wooden bars, 25-35mm wide, ideal for a comfortable grip with rounded edges. They are placed against a wall and raised above the floor to give the birds added security.

Recommended Dimensions
The recommended internal accommodation area is approximately 1sq ft per bantam, 1.5 sq ft per standard chicken and 2sq ft per large chicken. The nesting boxes need to be somewhere fairly low and dark. Your chickens will share the nest boxes, only using them when laying, 1 box per 3 or 4 birds is suitable.
